99 Metro stops… heaps of stories and… a different sort of history book.
There are plenty of ways of telling the history of Greater Manchester, but no one has set about it using the Metro tram.
So, here is a series of books which let you wander along the network, taking in five or so Metro stops at a time. Peter will paint a picture at each stop and Andrew will find a story which tells a bit of the history of Greater Manchester.
Each book will be pocket size, will be colour coded to match each of the lines and is the novel and a fun way to learn about the past.
And along the way, for the tram and trolley bus enthusiasts, we will include in the series, a homage to those tall stately vehicles which were the old corporation trams, which did the business from the late 19th. century into the middle of the next century.
Followed by the interloper, which was the trolley bus, which looked a lot like a bus except for the poles fastened to its roof. It had a shorter existence on the roads of Greater Manchester than its tram predecessors and left the scene to the motor bus.
And for the adventurous, there is that bonus that they can break their journey at each place and go looking for the people, buildings and events that are there to be discovered.
The first book started with the line to East Didsbury, taking in Old Trafford, Firswood, Chorlton, St Werburghs, Withington, Burton Road, West Didsbury, Didsbury Village and ending at East Didsbury.
And this is the second instalment which takes you from Cornbrook via Deansgate Castlefield and St Peter’s Square then onto Exchange Square.
It’s a journey into the heart of our city’s rich history.
